Not all Proctoring Services are Created Equal
As more and more companies and organizations move their skills assessment programs online, the need for expert, reliable proctoring services to ensure security continues to grow. Proctored testing offers several seamless ways for test managers to monitor individuals while they take online tests and Gauge integrates with several proctoring solutions so our customers can trust they will be able to deliver secure and well-monitored testing programs in the way that works best for their needs.
Your company spends a lot of time and money developing proprietary training and testing programs to assess the abilities of new hires, advance employee aptitudes, and certify your workforce for high-stakes skills in trades to allow continued operation in specific fields. Adding virtual or in-person proctoring to your online testing and exam program provides several critical benefits, including:
-
- Monitors exam-takers for behaviors such as head and eye movement that might indicate cheating
- Allows users to sit for exams in any location at any time
- Lets you test larger numbers of people without a physical space
- Makes it easy to test remote teams
- Protects your intellectual property from being taken and shared
As with any product you might purchase, when it comes to proctoring services there are many to choose from, but they are not all created equal and they don’t all provide the same standard of quality. One of the most important considerations is whether or not the company can guarantee the proctors they hire are properly trained to understand the many ways test results can be skewed by a variety of common biases.
Undertrained proctors can ruin your test sample by unfairly flagging exam-takers because of their own conscious and unconscious biases about gender, race, ethnicity, and religion, as well as other personal and cultural characteristics. Proctoring software that employs AI instead of people can also be poorly designed and developed, allowing for biased monitoring and flagging. When researching proctoring services, be sure to look for companies that can ensure the software is programmed to mitigate this risk.
For nearly thirty years, Gauge has provided solutions by building them directly into our software or by partnering with other leaders in the industry to seamlessly make their features available to our customers. We currently provide three fully-vetted proctoring services for you to choose from, with options that accommodate your needs for high- and low-stakes testing.
ProctorFree
You can add on this 100% virtual proctoring service by signing up for ProctorFree (paid separately) and configuring the integration in your Gauge settings. ProctorFree offers two types of virtual proctoring:
Fully Automated Proctoring
ProctorFree records your live-streamed test sessions and sends the recording to a cloud server where you can review each exam recording for on-screen and human anomalies that might indicate cheating or a security breach.
Human Assist Proctoring
This is the same as the fully automated proctoring live-stream recording but a professional human auditor reviews the test session recording and audits it for you then sends you the results.
ProctorU
You can add on this hybrid proctoring service by signing up for ProctorU (paid separately) and configuring the integration in your Gauge settings.
Live (Remote) Proctor (integrates with Gauge)
Each individual test session is monitored by a live proctor with active intervention protocols from a remote location via webcam.
GaugeLive
Included in every subscription to Gauge is the option for in-person proctoring for tests or exams given in a training center or classroom. With this service, Gauge provides an in-person proctor to oversee your session, which requires advanced scheduling.
No matter what platform you ultimately choose for your proctoring services – remote virtual, remote live, or in-person – adding this layer of security to your online testing and exams can help you and your test-takers get better results.
If your certification program is running on tools that were never built for it — and you’re starting to feel the friction in your daily operations — Gauge was designed for exactly this situation. It handles the full exam lifecycle for professional credentialing programs, from item banking through results and credential issuance, without requiring you to stitch together separate systems.
